Martha Michael & Danny Swopes

Martha's Bio

Martha Michael is a graduate of Southwestern Oklahoma State University and the University of Oklahoma. She was a high school English teacher in Fort Worth, Texas, where she taught grades 9-12 and AP English.

From 1987 to 1999 she worked at the Oklahoma State Department of Education. Mrs. Michael worked in federal programs, Indian education, and curriculum and instruction where she served in the capacity of Executive Director of Curriculum and Effective Schools. In 1999, she accepted a position at the University of Oklahoma, College of Continuing Education where she worked with at-risk schools needing comprehensive school improvement.

In 2002, she left OU and formed a partnership with Danny Swopes and Betty Souza to create an educational consulting company, Educational Development and Instructional Team (EDIT), which continues to work with Oklahoma schools to improve student achievement. EDIT currently is working with approximately 100 Oklahoma school districts.


Danny's Bio

Danny Swopes graduated from Elk City High School and attended Oklahoma State University graduating with a BS degree in secondary education. He continued his education receiving a Master of Secondary Administration from the University of Oklahoma. He also completed on year of law school at the University of Oklahoma School of Law. Danny has 28 years of experience in Oklahoma public education. Danny was a teacher for 9 years in the Oklahoma City and Western Heights school districts, teaching grades 6 through 12. Subjects taught were social studies, history, sociology and psychology.

Danny served as a school administrator for 19 years in the Western Heights and Little Axe school districts, 10 as a junior/senior high assistant, 6 as a junior high principal, 2 as a high school principal and 1 year as an assistant to the superintendent. In 1999, Danny accepted a position as a senior program development specialist (external coach) at the Center for Effective Schools at the University of Oklahoma and this past year 2003 as an educational consultant.

The work at OU consisted of working with identified at-risk schools to improve student achievement and develop comprehensive school change using the Effective Schools Model. Involved in the work at OU was conducting workshops, presentation, and training's in the areas of school improvement, correlates of Effective Schools, team building, test disaggregation, classroom management, high expectations (TESA), development of short and long term goals that are data-driven, and program evaluation of site performance. Since 2002, Danny has been a partner in the educational consulting company EDIT.

We work to customize all training to meet each school's professional development needs. All trainers are former Oklahoma teachers, administrators, university trainers, and/or State Department personnel.
